Reaction Paper #3

This reaction paper was the third weekly assignment I submitted in response to a chosen reading for my Foundations of Strategic Communication class. Each week, I had to choose an article, this week’s was Harrison & Wick’s Stakeholder Theory, Value, and Firm Performance, and find a way to respond to the information their article presented. In this paper I pushed myself to apply stakeholder theory and its value to a hospital’s mission statement, specifically Northwestern Medicine. I argued that hospital’s exist for the purpose of serving patients, but it’s their mission statement that dictates how they serve patients. This was a challenging perspective to take because the paper was brief and the context is significant; I learned a lot through applying this perspective to a real life context. It challenged me to persuade my readers to consider that hospitals that put patients at the center of their mission are organizations that consider four factors of value (goods and services, organizational justice, affiliation, and opportunity costs) in addition to the economic bottom line.

FOUNDATIONS OF STRATEGIC COMMUNICATIONS LEARNING OUTCOMES: 1) understand the importance of authentic mission statements to guide the development of communication at all levels of an organization, 2) use a refined notion of rhetorical practice to incorporate persuasion, identity and authenticity in the ordinary course of an organization’s business communication, and 3) understand the ways that a strategic focus can refine the effectiveness and felicity of an organization.
